Are you satisfied with your Avvo rating, or would you like to see your Avvo score increase and improve? One of the biggest reasons some lawyers dislike Avvo is that it gave them a lower ranking than they thought they deserved, but with a little effort most of those attorneys could significantly raise their Avvo rating. As I've found in my own law practice, Avvo can be a significant source of new client income. Here are some tips on improving your Avvo rating to bring in more business.

  1. Fill Out Your Avvo Profile Completely. I am amazed at the number of lawyers who claim their Avvo profile and then do nothing to make sure it accurately reflects their credentials and experience. Getting angry because your empty Avvo profile gives you a low rating is not a sensible response. If you want Avvo to rate you correctly, start by providing Avvo with the information it needs to properly evaluate you. The Avvo system largely depends on the information provided to it by the lawyer, so if a lawyer has a low score it is often because the attorney hasn't properly developed his or her profile. Don't leave anything blank; fill out your profile completely to maximize your score.

  2. Write for Publications. If you have published law-related articles, list them on your Avvo profile. If you haven't published anything, now is the time to start writing. You probably belong to at least one legal organization that has a newsletter, and odds are that the organization needs content to go in their newsletter. Submit an article in your area of expertise and add a publication credit to your Avvo profile as a good way to increase your rating.

  3. List your Memberships. Many attorneys fail to realize that Avvo is interested in their professional involvements in the legal community. Your involvement in organizations related to your area of practice demonstrates that you take your law practice seriously, and that you are committed to improving yourself as an attorney. Avvo gives you some credit for that in your Avvo rating, especially if your peers have elevated you to an office or position within that group. Post your memberships and involvements so that Avvo can give you credit for your involvement in the profession.

  4. Speaking Engagements. Have you conducted any continuing legal education (CLE) programs for your peers? Make sure to list those CLE programs you have taught. If you haven't taught a CLE program, think about your areas of expertise and offer to teach a program at an upcoming meeting of your local bar association. Odds are that the person responsible for lining up speakers will jump at the opportunity to fill the spot for another month. Teaching a CLE program will expand your knowledge of the subject you teach, improve your image among your peers, and increase your Avvo rating.

  5. Awards. Are you in Best Lawyers, Superlawyers, or any of the other organizations that rate attorneys? If so, list your membership. Being in groups like Superlawyers in particular can provide a big boost to your Avvo score.

  6. Cases. Were you the winning attorney of record in a published appellate opinion? Post the case citation to your Avvo profile to obtain credit for a significant case victory.

  7. Peer Endorsements. Have you maxed out all the information you can provide in all of the other categories on your Avvo profile, but still can't get to the score you want? Try getting some peer endorsements from other attorneys. Each endorsement from another attorney will slightly increase your Avvo score (though there may be a limit to how many endorsement points you can obtain). Contact the attorneys you know who are on Avvo and ask them to endorse you on your profile.

Spend some time working on your Avvo profile and you'll see your Avvo rating increase. And as your Avvo rating increases, your odds of making a significant amount of money off of your Avvo profile will increase as well. Except for my own law practice website, my Avvo profile has generated more income for me than anything else on the internet. Develop your Avvo profile to maximize your Avvo score and watch your income increase with it.
